Have Fun At The Water Festival

Dec 22, 2022

Songkran, known to the Dai people as the Water Festival, is the greatest traditional festival of the Thai-speaking peoples and Southeast Asia, and is celebrated on that day in Thailand, Laos, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Cambodia, as well as by the Dai people of Yunnan, China. It is also celebrated in overseas settlements of Southeast Asian peoples, such as Kowloon City, Tai Po Tai Wo Temple, Sai Wan, Sham Shui Po and the Zhonghe district of New Taipei City, Taiwan.

The festival lasts for several days, with people rising early in the morning to bathe in the Buddha's rituals, followed by several days of celebrations during which pure water is thrown at each other in a prayer to wash away the bad times of the past year and make a fresh start for the new year. The first two days of the festival are devoted to the removal of the old and the last day to the welcoming of the new. It is the third festival to be celebrated at the beginning of the year, after the New Year and the Indian Red Festival, and is the most important festival after the Lunar New Year.

Nowadays, when it's time for the water festival, all the streets are filled with people, immersed in the revelry of the festival, and everyone who walks down the street has a large water gun in their hand, ready to engage in the "water war".
